What to Pack in Your Newborn Hospital Bag

Feb 5, 2023 | Uncategorized

Hello, mums-to-be!

As a newborn photographer, I know that the arrival of a new baby is an exciting and busy time, filled with lots of preparations to make before their arrival.

From setting up the nursery to formulating a birth plan, there’s a lot to think about! However, one of the most important things to do before your little one arrives is to pack your hospital bag. But what should you pack? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! In this post,

I’ll be sharing my top tips for what to pack in your hospital bag, so you can feel prepared and comfortable during your hospital stay.

Let’s get started!

A Comfy Robe or Pyjamas for Your Hospital Stay

When packing your hospital bag, it’s important to remember that you’ll be spending several days in the hospital after giving birth. During this time, you’ll want to be as comfortable as possible, especially when it comes to your sleepwear.

After all, rest is crucial to your recovery and overall well-being. Pack a cosy and comfortable robe or pyjamas that are easy to put on and take off, as well as comfortable to sleep in. Look for fabrics that are soft and breathable, such as cotton or bamboo. These materials will help keep you cool and comfortable, which is especially important if you tend to get hot or sweaty during sleep.

In addition to being comfortable, it’s a good idea to choose pyjamas that are designed for nursing, if you plan to breastfeed. These typically have special openings or flaps that make it easy to breastfeed your baby without having to take off your pyjamas. This can be especially helpful during the first few days after giving birth when your baby will need to eat frequently.

When choosing a robe or pyjamas, consider the fit as well. You’ll want to choose something that’s loose-fitting and doesn’t put pressure on your abdomen, as this can be uncomfortable after a C-section or vaginal birth. Additionally, look for items that are easy to care for, as you may not have access to laundry facilities during your hospital stay.

Finally, consider packing a few extra items to make your hospital stay even more comfortable. For example, you may want to bring a pair of slippers or socks to wear around the hospital, as well as a soft and cosy blanket to snuggle up with. These little touches can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel during your hospital stay.

Favourite Snacks and Drinks

Giving birth can be a long and tiring process, and having some of your favourite snacks and drinks on hand can help keep you energized and comfortable during your hospital stay.

Whether you prefer salty or sweet snacks, packing some of your favourite treats can help you feel more at home in the hospital. Some good options include nuts, granola bars, crackers, or dried fruit.

In addition to snacks, it’s important to stay hydrated during labour and post-birth. Packing a reusable water bottle or a sports drink can help you stay refreshed and energized throughout the process. Remember, it’s important to check with your hospital to see if they have any restrictions on outside food and drink, as some hospitals may have specific rules around what is allowed in the delivery room.

Finally, don’t forget about your partner or support person! They may also appreciate having some snacks and drinks on hand, especially if they are planning to stay with you during your hospital stay. Packing some extra snacks and drinks can help them stay energized and comfortable as well.

Baby Clothing

Your newborn will require clothing during their hospital stay, so it’s essential to pack a few basics. Pack a few babygros or sleepsuits in newborn size, as well as a hat and a pair of scratch mittens to keep them warm and protected. Keep in mind that newborns need frequent nappy changes, so you’ll want to pack a supply of nappies and water-based wipes.

When choosing clothes for your baby, consider the hospital environment and your own comfort level. Hospitals can be quite warm, so lightweight cotton clothing is often a good choice. However, it’s always a good idea to pack an extra layer or two, such as a light jacket or a warm blanket, just in case.

If you have a particular outfit in mind for your baby’s first photos, make sure to pack it as well. A special outfit can make for some truly adorable pictures to treasure for years to come. Remember to pack some extra blankets or wraps for your baby’s comfort and warmth, and keep in mind any hospital regulations around photography or outside clothing.

It’s also worth noting that some hospitals provide certain items, such as nappies or swaddles, so be sure to check with your hospital beforehand to see what they provide and what you’ll need to bring.

Entertainment and Comfort

While you’re waiting for your new bundle of joy to arrive, you may have some downtime during your hospital stay. That’s why it’s important to pack some leisure items to keep yourself entertained and relaxed. A good book or magazine can be a great distraction during long periods of waiting, while some headphones or earphones can be helpful for listening to music or a podcast.

If you prefer something more interactive, consider bringing a puzzle book, a deck of cards, or a favourite board game to play with your partner or visitors. And if you’re feeling crafty, pack a knitting project or some colouring books to help pass the time.

Remember, you may also have visitors during your hospital stay, so think about packing some items to help make them comfortable as well. Some spare pillows or blankets can be helpful, as well as some snacks or drinks to share.

Keep in mind that hospitals can be busy and noisy places, so be sure to pack items that are easy to pick up and put down, and that won’t disturb other patients. And, of course, don’t forget to take breaks and rest when you need to – after all, you’ll need all your energy for your new arrival!

Phone Chargers and Other Essentials – Pack your hospital bag

Don’t forget to pack in your hospital bag your phone charger or other essential electronics, such as a tablet. You’ll likely want to use your phone or other devices to stay connected with loved ones and capture photos and videos of your new baby.

In addition to electronics, it’s important to remember any essential medication that you may need during your hospital stay, such as painkillers or other prescriptions. Keep these items in a separate bag or container to ensure easy access when needed.

Other essentials to consider packing include a comfortable pillow or cushion, a lightweight blanket or wrap, and a small amount of cash for vending machines or parking. You may also want to pack some toiletries, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, face wipes, and moisturizer, to help you feel refreshed and comfortable during your hospital stay.

Remember, space may be limited in your hospital room, so try to pack only the essentials and items that will help you feel most comfortable and relaxed during your stay.
